Asmara Eritrea May 21 2016 - The Sudanese Independence Day Party

 

Dawid invites me to drink coffee and have some pastry in one of his favorite pastry's: La Dolce Vita.

I spend all day updating our web pages, which means walking a lot, meeting a lot of friendly staff, waiting for the manager or person responsible, and not much excitement.

For the evening I have an invitation for the Sudanese independence day party in Cinema Asmara. Several leading Sudanese singers give a live performance. The audience is a mix of Sudanese living, or staying in Eritrea, Eritreans, and some tourists. Since the 1998-2000 border war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, Eritrea is more and more Sudan orientated, resulting in increasing trade and political and cultural exchange programs. Many Sudanese choose Eritrea as the destination for their rest days or holidays. And an increasing number of Sudanese is working and living in Eritrea.

The ambiance is very similar to the live shows of the Eritrean artists. Enthusiast Sudanese come forward to honor their favorite artist, dancing between the first row and the stage, or even on stage. I am shy to dance. "Just do like me!" A Sudanese woman makes inviting moves to guide me to the dance floor. Although I am shy (the dance floor is still empty) it would be rude not to accept the invitation. So I make my interpretation of the Sudanese dance moves for a minute or so, until the Sudanese men take over.

After 9h30 PM the party continues around the live stages on Harnet Avenue.
