Asmara Eritrea May 24 2011
Today will be the official
celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Eritrea as an independent
nation.
And like every year it is the
birth day of Yosief, the son of Haile and Freweini, my family in law.
We drink coffee, tea, araki,
and there is a birthday cake and hembesha and kitcha.
Haile found us two entry cards
for the stadium. But we don't need four cards. Of course I am happy with
the fact that he did his best to get us into the stadium.
At 4:00 PM we take a taxi to
the stadium. At the gate flowers, flags, and booklets are handed out to
the public.
The program in the stadium
starts with a brief opening show that symbolizes the watch.
It is followed by the National
Anthem, The NHCC speech and the
president's speech.
A military parade with
representatives of all armed forces and the Asmara police and a fly over
of military planes and helicopters is followed by a performance of music
and dance by the South African musical troupe UMOJA, depicting unity,
togetherness, and harmony.
The celebrations are concluded
with a 40 minutes long musical presented by over 4000 students. The
musical uses the Eritrean historic town, Nacfa, as symbol of Eritrean
reliance. The musical also highlights the major achievements Eritrea
scored in the past 20 years of its independence.
