Asmara Eritrea - February 10 2017

 

I follow the track of what used to be part of the railway line through Asmara, knowing it will guide me to the Asmara brewery, in an attempt to find some souvenirs. In May 2016 the brewery issued a limited edition of beer labels on the occasion of Eritrea's silver jubilee on May 24 2016. Unfortunately all the labels went with the bottles to the celebrating Eritrean population. The Asmara Brewery produces both for local consumers and also exports a significant amount of beer. Not only in the traditional bottles from the Melotti era, but also in tin cans for export and shops, the sales manager explains. I leave with some small gadgets.

In Bar Amanuel I have a healthy fresh fruit juice, and a nice chat with Mr Mesfin from Indianapolis, visiting his homeland.

In the City Center Snack Bar, one of my favorite fast food restaurants, I have frittata for lunch. As always it is served with two very fresh breads. I do my best to eat the frittata using the pieces of bread as a spoon.

After lunch time I visit Mr. Tadesse of the Eritrean National Chamber of Commerce, to have a chat on the Eritrean economy and the issue 'what's new'. Mr. Tadesse asks if I visited the new recreation center. He explains how to go there. Having no further program for today, I decide to check it right now.

Behind the facade of the Arabana Restaurant I find a very modern restaurant, with a spacious garden in its back yard. In the garden one can join a BBQ and I find a traditional Yemeni fish oven. Several smaller buildings are available for special celebrations. In one of the buildings two girls are preparing traditional Eritrean coffee. One can order a small private pot of coffee (jebena) containing six cups of delicious coffee spiced with gingibul (optional). Of course I will order one. It is served with popcorn and a smile from Nardos.  .
