Asmara Eritrea - June 1st 2007
The program is finished. There
is nothing left to visit, or to do.
I spent the whole day walking
in Asmara, and decide to visit the Italian school. I saw the school from the bell
tower yesterday. It is one of the typical examples of the special
historical relations between Eritrea and Italy. Although Italian
colonialism ended formally in 1941, when the British forces kicked them
out of the East African region during WW2, the Italian culture is still
alive in Eritrea.
I politely ask the guard if I
can enter the premises to make some pictures. It is the director of the
school that has to give the final permission. it is a lot of work for a
few pictures and a fast glimpse on the school, but with an empty agenda, I
should not complain. After explaining my position, the friendly director
of Italian origin appoints a guide to accompany me, while I am on the
school's premises.
When visiting the former
Spinelli store, and asking permission to make pictures, the men point me
to the fact that the US embassy is right behind this building. Therefore
it is not allowed to make any pictures. But I am able to convince them,
that no part of the US embassy will be on my pictures, showing them the
planned directions. It is okay, and I make my pictures.
