Asmara - November 14 2009
On Bahti Meskerem Square the
New Eritrean Union of Women (NEUW Central Branch) celebrate their 30th anniversary with
an exhibition.
In ten army tents small
private enterprises, construction companies, textile factories, hospitals,
and the Eritrean Defense Forces are showing
presentations of the role of Eritrean women in the Eritrean history and
economy.
In every tent I meet kind and enthusiast
women, proudly explaining their presentation.
Their union started in 1979
when Eritrea was struggling for independence, where Eritrean women played
a heroic role. Their impressive achievements in competence, productivity
and creativity, continued in the post-independence period. The results are
shown in the exhibition.
At the Tourism Service Center
I make inquiries for a travel permit. The procedures changed in a disappointing
way. The permits are valid for one or two nights only. One permit for
every destination. So I have to return to the office after one trip, to
get my permit for the next.
I discuss the issue with the
staff. Why make it so difficult for the tourist. The staff don't have an
answer. I ask them what will happen if I stay longer than the permit
allows. They tell me that it is no problem to stay an extra night.
I am a bit worried. I will
have to change my program drastically. My one week stay in Keren will have
to be shortened to one or two nights. Hansu will be disappointed as well.
I hope she understands that it is this new rule, and not her hospitality
that will make me stay for just a few nights.
