Asmara Eritrea - May 21st 2006
During the daytime I strolled the streets of Asmara. Of course there is not much left to explore in Asmara after so many visits. The Cultural Asset Rehabilitation
Program resulted in several beautiful renovated buildings. Many offices have been decorated to celebrate Eritrea's 15th Independence Day. And knowing there will be another visit in August there is no reason to hurry.
In the late afternoon, the Asmara police is preparing the road blocks for the carnival that will pass the main street of Asmara, Harnet Avenue. I carefully select a nice spot to have a good view on the parade, so I will be able to take some nice pictures as well. And close to a stall that is frying
strongly spiced snacks for one Nakfa per piece. I share them with the policemen next to me. For the sake of sharing and to buy some credit, just in case I have to step forward when making pictures.
Nicest memory: the bonus snacks I received for being a good customer. In a country so poor, a bonus is rare.
