Medeber - Asmara Eritrea - November 21 2007

 

At 9:00 when the Lufthansa office opens, I confirm my return flight and explain that I am still waiting for a phone call about the rest of my lost luggage. The girl makes a phone call to the airport. My luggage is waiting for me. I ask the name of the contact to make sure there will be no further delay.

I take the number 1 bus to the airport. At the entrance there is a thorough check of my rucksack, camera bag and content of my clothes. The collected luggage is checked as well for electronics and so. I drop most of the luggage in my apartment, and prepare to bring the gifts.

After visiting several families, I walk to the Medeber Market to deliver last times pictures. The women know me by now. I have to make more pictures, and bring them next time. Fred Siwak's butterfly is still hanging on the wall of one of the workshops. Several nice remarks are added.

In a small tea shop hidden between the stalls I drink a few glasses of tea and watch the people shopping and doing their work. Grinders are buzzing, men are restyling all kinds of automobile parts and empty oil cans into household utensils, crosses and more.

At the Cathedral Snack Bar I have my daily portion of vitamin C in the form of mixed juice. The girls are posing for my camera, and are exited about the results on the LCD on the back of the camera. I explain they have to be patient, because I have to connect the camera to my PC to download the results.

At 18:00 when the oven is heated, I have a pizza in Terhas Pizzeria Eritrea, that is located a few blocks behind the fish market in Mendefera Street. Terhas informs me that there is a church feast tomorrow at the St. Michaels Church in Biet Makae, opposite to the Italian cemetery.
