Keren Eritrea - November 26 2007
Monday is market day in Keren.
Coming from Ciuf Ciufit and following the riverbed, one first passes a
firewood and household utensils market. Many camels and donkeys form
living stalls, resting in the sun.
A few hundred meters further
is another market area, surrounded by walls. Another colorful place where
women sell household utensils, colorful baskets decorated with beads and
Red Sea shells, straw products, clothes, shoes and spices.
The camel and livestock market
(to the left of the road to Afabet) is dominated by men dressed in kaftans
and turbans, waiting for customers to sell their goats, cattle, donkeys or
camels. In a makeshift tea shop I have a few cups of tea, before walking
to Dearit.
It is said that the small
shrine, built into a baobab, is a place from which fertility springs. Last
time I came to pray to this black Madonna in the wooden chapel, for a girl
who was desperately trying to get a baby. I left her picture in the
chapel, and brought
some soil back home from the roots of the tree.
Just before my flight to Eritrea, I
was told by one of her girl friends that she is pregnant, expecting her baby in
April 2008. Miracles happen here at Mariam Dearit's Holy grounds. And now
I come back to express my thanks on behalf of the happy girl.
I visit the beautiful orchard
behind the chapel with orange and lemon trees. A priest accompanies me,
because there is dogs guarding the place. He also shows me the stable with
some beautiful Dutch cows.
Before I leave he hands me six oranges as a
gift, happy with my story about previous visits. I am touched. In a
country so poor even one orange is a generous gift to a tourist loaded
with euros.
