Adi Yakob Eritrea - December 06 2007

Today I have planned a walk from Tsa'edakristyan to Adi Yakob, starting with an early bus number 19 from the bus station at Eritrea Square to Tsa'edakristyan. From the last bus stop the road forks to the right at a tree and passes the Deketesmin Junior School.

From here it is a 40 minutes / four kilometers walk to the next village, Adi Quonzi and another 30 minutes / three kilometers walk to Adi Yakob. Again I only engage students and teachers walking and cycling to their school in Tsa'edakristyan.

The villages are a bit dull, with little activity. I follow the children passing the primary school on their donkeys to the water reservoir just outside Adi Yakob.

After an hour I have seen it all and I return to Tsa'edakristyan, which is a one hour walk, passing agricultural land, where farmers are threshing or piling their harvest.

When I pass the Deketesmin Junior School for a second time, I ask permission to one of the teachers to make some pictures. "I will introduce you to the head of school", he says. He takes me to the teachers room, where I am invited to drink tea and eat some bread.

I ask the teacher politely to whom I will pay the Nakfa's for my tea and lunch. "You are our guest!", he replies. The teachers show me their school, sports facilities and offices, constructed in 2003, with pride, telling me about the school and its program, that apart from the usual subjects, focuses on all kinds of sports.

Under a makeshift construction in front of a bar, close to the bus stop, I take some rest, and mineral water, before returning to Asmara by public bus.

I spend the afternoon, as usual on the streets of Asmara, drinking mineral water or a fruit juice in one of the many bars, meeting friends and gathering and checking data for my Eritrean information pages..
