Asmara Eritrea - May 17 2008
In the morning I pay a short visit to a display of paintings by students of junior schools in Asmara, affixed to the wall of the Ministry of Education. I have some cappuccinos and pastry for breakfast in one of the cafés in Harnet Avenue, before I start my daily walk through Asmara.
On Bahti Meskerem square a stage is prepared to host a number of dramas and concerts on the occasion of Eritrea's 17th Independence Day this evening and tomorrow evening.
Walking in the Tiravolo district from the Alla Scala Hotel to the Expo and Bologna Hotel, I hear live music coming from a garage on the opposite side of the street. When I watch in its direction, a man invites me to come in and join the Independence Day feast of Lilo Transport, one of the three largest transport companies in Eritrea.
The walls of the garage are covered with colorful textile and banners with Tigrinya text. I am invited to eat injera, and the personnel is challenging me to join their dance. I accept the invitation and share the joy of the feasting employees of Lilo transport on the dance floor.
I am introduced to the manager and his financial administrator, and they offer me a chair next to the managing staff, happy that I am sharing their Independence Day party, where I am happy with the spontaneous invitation, which is so typical for Eritrean hospitality.
In the evening hours I attend the cultural shows, drama, singing and dancing at the Bahti Meskerem Square with some five thousand Asmarino's gathered on the grandstand.
