From Keren to Asmara - June 2 2008
After a kitcha and tea
breakfast, I visit the Monday market with Hansu, to buy some stuff for my
Eritrean wife in Holland: hair oil, fresh peanuts and more typical
Eritrean food.
At the bus station the line of
passengers for the bus to Asmara is alarmining. A queue of bags, stones,
textile patches, and more form a virtual row. Each item represents a traveler.
I leave my rucksack at the end
of the queue and with Hansu I try to find a solution for the threatening
delay. There is no way to change my position in the line of waiting
people, but there is a small Toyota mini bus, offering a ride to Asmara
for 80 Nakfa.
But the bus is empty, and how
long will it take to find 14 passengers that are willing to pay a 250%
surcharge for the trip to Asmara? But a seat in front is a perfect
place to get in and out at the checkpoints. It takes less then 30 minutes
to get every seat occupied.
Just after 12:00 we arrive in
Asmara that feels comfortably cool. In the Cathedral Snack Bar I have
lunch. In the house of Gebrehiwot and Zewdi I have a bath and change
clothes.
With some Omo washing-powder
and a bucket I start cleaning my cloths, but Zewdi insists that this is
not the work of a guest, and hands my work to Gabriela, the maid of the
family.
I spend the rest of they day
walking, and enjoying fruit juices, cappuccino's and pasty. I also visit
the tailor to have my trousers fixed and family of my wife. In Terhas'
Pizzeria Eritrea I have a medium pizza number 10.
Back in Gebrehiwots house, he
suggests we should make a short evening walk. The walk coincidentally
passes one of Gebrehiwot's favorite bars, where we have some araki's with
friends of Gebrehiwot, so the walk takes a little more time than planned.
