Asmara Eritrea - June 5 2008
Today I will do another of the
suggested walks: Adi Hawsha - Tselot - Asmara. The first instruction
reads: "Take a bus to Adi Hawsha on the Dekemhare road and get off at
the 14 km area".
Early in the morning I walk to
the Northern bus station where the buses to Dekemhare, Senafe and similar
directions wait for their passengers. When I arrive at the bus station, I
observe that "where the passengers wait for the buses" is a
better description.
Although I am very early,
there is a queue of at least 200 people waiting for the Dekemhare buses
still to come.
I park my yellow plastic
Logica bag in the virtual queue of bags, stones and other personal items.
Patiently I wait, hoping for a miracle. Every once and a while people make
a run on a private bus, but most of the time without success.
After two hours watching, I
decided that this is not a good start for the 14 kilometers walk. If I
have to wait three or four hours for the bus to Dekemhare, I might just as
well walk from Asmara to Adi Hawsha (and back via Tselot).
Tomorrow I will try it again,
starting from Bloko Godaif, where small Toyota buses will serve the
villages surrounding Asmara on the road to Dekemhare and the road to
Mendefera.
I spend the rest of the day
visiting the Medeber markets in the morning and visiting family in the
afternoon.
