Asmara Eritrea - May 25 2008

 

I am invited for lunch by Feshaye and Yordanos. We will celebrate the third birthday of Naomi.

In the morning I walk from Sembel to Dearo Paulos, a small village south of Asmara. My first impression of the village is a bit disappointing. A lot of recently built houses and many still under construction.

When I ask if the village has a church or a mosque, I am told to walk in the southern direction to the old village, two kilometer further uphill. The landscape changes and I walk into a more traditional village.

Unfortunately there is a military camp, and the military doesn't allow me to continue my walk. "Get out" is the clear instruction after a passport check.

From Dearo Paulos I take the mini bus back to Sembel to avoid further encounters with the Eritrean military.

In a grocery shop in Sembel I buy some chilled soft drinks and some ice creams for the children at Naomi's birthday.
